Information
about the
Deaf Mountaineering Club

The Deaf Mountaineering Club (UK) was founded in 1960 by a small group of Deaf people who wanted the opportunity to continue to enjoy rock-climbing after they were introduced to the sport by the British Deaf and Dumb Association (now the BDA) at its first Mountain Venture Courses in Keswick.

The DMC grew in membership over the years to around the 100 mark. Currently it has over 50 members.  The members come from all over Britain and Northern Ireland.

A Committee, which is elected every three years, and which meets twice a year, is responsible for the running of the Club and organises an annual programme of Meets.

During the 1960s rock-climbing was the most popular activity of the members, but from the 1970s onwards mountain and hill-walking, ridge-walking and rockscrambling gradually took over from rock-c1imbing as the main activity of members. Nowadays there is very little rock-climbing done.

Meets are arranged all over England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Every year there is a one-week Meet held in the Scottish highlands. Sometimes there are other one-week Meets in September and end of December/early January.  There is an Annual Weekend Meet and Dinner in November in the Lake District and an Annual Spring Weekend Meet in a different venue each year. In addition, there are various one-day Meets held in different parts of the country throughout the year.

The Annual General Meeting is held during the Annual Meet and Reunion Dinner in November.

The DMC is now affiliated to the Ramblers Association.  The current membership fee of the DMC is £5 and it runs from 1st November to
31st October each year. See membership form
